About Wairiri

Independent exploration capability, grounded in the field

Wairiri Exploration Group helps explorers, permit holders and project owners make better geological and programme decisions in New Zealand and beyond.

Practical geology with commercial purpose

Wairiri brings together geological knowledge and judgement, New Zealand permitting expertise, field systems, GIS and technical coordination. Work can begin with an early opportunity, a difficult dataset, a permit application or a field programme that needs experienced direction.

We bring a practical, can-do attitude to every project. We focus on understanding the geological question, identifying the information needed and finding a workable way forward. The aim is to give clients clear, well-supported advice and practical results they can act on.

Many of our team come from rural backgrounds, which helps us communicate easily with farmers, landowners and other rural stakeholders. We understand the importance of straightforward communication, respect for the land and property, and doing what we say we will do.

That practical approach does not mean cutting corners. Geological evidence, health and safety, environmental conditions, land access and permit requirements define how the work should be planned and carried out.

Wairiri is a group of experienced independent subcontractors brought together to suit each assignment. This structure lets programmes and project teams scale up or down as the work changes, while drawing in the right field, technical and specialist capability at the right stage.

How Wairiri works

  • Start with the geological and commercial decision that needs to be made
  • Use historic information before spending money to recreate it
  • Design work programmes that are credible, staged and achievable
  • Assemble a flexible subcontractor team matched to the programme and its location
  • Build health, safety and emergency arrangements into planning before fieldwork begins
  • Keep field, regulatory, land-access and technical work connected
  • Present limitations clearly and avoid overstating what the data supports

Health & safety

Built into the programme, not added at the end

Field programmes are planned around the people, terrain, access, weather, equipment and contractor interfaces involved. Wairiri’s leadership includes extractives certificates of competence, supported by practical systems that are communicated clearly and reviewed as conditions change.

01

Plan the work

Identify material hazards, access constraints, communications, emergency arrangements and competency requirements before mobilisation.

02

Coordinate the team

Set clear roles across clients, landowners, subcontractors and drill or earthworks crews, including how changes and incidents are communicated.

03

Competent oversight

Apply field experience and relevant extractives competencies while confirming the statutory appointments and certificate requirements for each operation.
